OFMS GIRLS FASTPITCH WINS SWC CHAMPIONSHIP

For the 2016 season, the Olmsted Falls Middle School Fastpitch team - led by Coaches Amanda Abraham and Sara Banhidy - finished with a 9-3 record and a Southwestern Conference Championship! The Lady Bulldogs battled a rainy spring, preventing many outdoor practices and shortening the regular season due to rainouts. When there was finally a clearing of rain, the Olmsted Falls Bulldogs travelled to Avon Lake to open their season with a 25-0 win. Pitching for the Bulldogs was eighth grader Kayla Kippes, who struck-out ten batters and limited the Shoregals to one hit. Along with a great defense, the Bulldogs brought a strong offense that included Danielle Stevens, Drue Thomas, Brynn Longo, Kyra Longo, Nadia Khalaf, Bailey Marks, Kayla Kippes, Jess Holcomb, and Becca Johnson all recording hits. After defeating Avon Lake, the Lady Bulldogs moved on to play Amherst, Middleburg Heights, and Avon twice.  Splitting the week, the team dropped two games to Amherst and Avon while also picking up two wins, handing both Avon and Middleburg Heights their first loss of the season. Against Avon, pitcher Kayla Kippes threw a complete game shutout, striking out a season high of sixteen batters. In addition to phenomenal pitching, the Bulldog outfield (consisting of Nadia Khalaf, Morgan Clute, and Kylee Alofaituli) made picture perfect catches, robbing the Avon Eagles of numerous hits.

Continuing their season, the Bulldogs then moved on to face Westlake at home. With strong at-bats and hits by Kyra Longo, Brynn Longo, Drue Thomas, Nadia Khalaf, Alanna Peltz, Bailey Marks, and Kelly Buryanek, the fastpitch team recored a 7-1 win. The next day, the Bulldogs continued their winning ways at by beating Avon Lake at home with a score of 12-2. Travelling again, the Bulldogs picked up a road win against North Olmsted. Seventh grader Sara Zawadzki took the mound and recorded her first win, striking out seven while guiding the team to a 23-0 victory. Also a seventh grader, catcher Ally Spellcy was strong behind the plate and had a great command of the game. After battling an injury that occurred during tryouts, eighth grader Alexx Watters was able to record her first hits of the season, crushing two singles. Bringing their regular season to an end, the OFMS Fastpitch team travelled to Amherst. In a well-fought, close game, Olmsted Falls lost to Amherst. More motivated than ever, the Lady Bulldogs began to prepare for their tournament run.

Due to quite a number of rainouts, the Bulldogs were seeded low in the tournament as their competitors were able to get more games in throughout the season. However, that did not instill any worry in to Olmsted Falls. Opening the tournament, the Bulldogs played Westlake. Seventh grader Keeley Patton took the mound, throwing a solid five innings that included ten strikeouts. Kayla Kippes came in as relief, closing out the last two innings as the Bulldogs won 10-1! Advancing to the semifinals round, the Bulldogs faced #1-seed Amherst. Having lost to Amherst twice, the team was ready to win, and did just that; eliminating them from the tournament with a 4-0 win. Kayla Kippes threw a beautiful game, striking out eight batters, and the Bulldog defense was unstoppable! Catcher Kyra Longo made a beautiful throw down to second base, catching a baserunner attempting to steal. Brynn Longo and Danielle Stevens turned two double plays. Jess Holcomb, Bailey Marks, and Alexx Watters hit a single while Nadia Khalaf recorded a triple. Reaching the championship game, Olmsted Falls now faced Middleburg Heights. Kayla Kippes stood strong, recording 15 strikeouts in her complete game. Throughout the entire game, tension was high as both teams were playing well. Both teams had great pitching, making it a rough day for batters. However, an RBI single by Morgan Clute would be all that the Bulldogs would need as they won the championship game 1-0. Congratulations ladies on your wonderful season and your championship win!
