This letter is to inform you about an exciting evening of parent/teacher conferences.  We will once again be including students in the conference process; and therefore, conferences will be student-led.  This is a change from the traditional format in which the child’s progress was discussed by the teacher and parent. In that scenario, parents and teachers assumed a great deal of ownership of the students’ accomplishments and failures.  If there was a problem, it was up to the parent or teacher to decide the next step. In student-led conferences, students take ownership of their work, accomplishments, and plans for remediation or improvement. In preparation for the conference, students evaluate their learning and make notes about what they have learned, how they have improved, and what they still need to do better.

The teacher plays an important role by providing students with the knowledge and strategies that will allow them to be self-sufficient on the day of their conference.  We will be there for support and encouragement and to discuss any points of interest or concern. We believe that empowering students to take charge of their work, to be accountable, to communicate to parents on a new level, and to set goals is meaningful.

This presentation is your chance to show a positive interest in your child’s progress in middle school.  Your child will have the opportunity to provide valuable information to you and to open the doors of communication between students, parents, and teachers in a positive and informative environment.

We understand that there is occasionally the need for private discussion without your child present.  We will be happy to schedule a traditional parent/teacher conference at another time if necessary.  However, we prefer not to send the student out of the room at the end of his or her student-led conference as that defeats the purpose.

Your child will present his or her conference on either Thursday, November 29, 2018, or on Tuesday, December 4, 2018. Please complete the Google scheduling form by Tuesday, November 27, 2018. If you and your child are not able to attend conferences, a parent signature will be required on your child’s conference packet, and this packet must then be returned to his/her STAR teacher.

If you need to schedule a conference with any of your child’s Explorer teachers (i.e. Band, Choir, Art, Health, Fundamentals, Foreign Language, French, Spanish, Technology Education, Design & Modeling, Robotics, Medical Detective, App Creator, Life Skills, and Digital Connections), please stop by their respective classrooms on Thursday, November 29, 2018, or on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, from 4:00–7:30 PM. The physical education teachers will be in the physical education offices from 4:00-7:30 PM on both Thursday, November 29, 2018, and on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.
