Parent Resources for Helping Children Cope with Grief

The Falls-Lenox School community has been saddened by the passing of beloved first grade teacher Marty Simon. Mr. Simon was an outstanding teacher and coach who has taught in our district for 18 years, and who served this community and our students well.

To assist parents of our young Bulldogs in helping your students cope with this sad event, following are just a few suggestions:

  • Use simple and clear words. (For example, “I  have some sad news to tell you.")
  • Listen and comfort. Every child reacts differently. (For example, reassure your child that you are there to listen and comfort them)
  • Put emotions into words. (For example, encourage your kids to say what they are thinking and feeling.)
  • Upon learning of someone’s death, it is typical for one to recall previous losses and for past feelings to resurface.  It is helpful to allow the child to discuss and process previous losses as well as the current loss.

Please also know that our school administrators, school counselor and school psychologist continue to be available to support your child in any way you feel would help.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to us in the days and weeks ahead.
