2/22/18 Safety Message for OFCS Parents

The following message was emailed directly to all OFCS parents on Thursday, February 22nd:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is important to us that we keep the community up to date regarding any issues related to school safety. Today two students made the high school administration aware of a Snapchat post that entailed a threat to the high school. The rumor was that an Olmsted Falls High School student was going to bring a weapon to school and cause harm on Friday, February 23.

The student was immediately removed from the classroom and our School Resource Officer became involved with the investigation. The Olmsted Township Police Department contacted the family in order to assess the threat. The threat was determined to be nullified. Due to the nature and circumstances surrounding the Snapchat post, the FBI has been notified and is involved with the investigation as well.

Tomorrow school will continue as planned. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. There is no threat. If there was, school would be cancelled. The circumstances in the United States have caused significant anxiety and we understand that people are very sensitive at this time. To make our school community feel less anxious, we are partnering with the Olmsted Township Police Department and there will be an added police presence at Olmsted Falls High School tomorrow.

Responsible social media use by everyone is more important now than ever before. Please take a moment this evening to have a discussion with your student(s) about the importance of the content that they post, the message that it sends, and the potential ramifications that may occur.  Additionally, please reinforce our district’s “see something, say something” practice as this is how we became aware of this incident.

Thanks for your time and attention.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jim Lloyd, Superintendent for Olmsted Falls City Schools
Holly Schafer, Olmsted Falls High School Principal
Chief Matt Vanyo, Olmsted Township Police Department
School Resource Officer Joseph English, Olmsted Township Police Department
