OFIS 5TH GRADERS COMPETE IN MATH PROBLEM SOLVING TOURNAMENT

photo (19)The Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Fifth and Sixth Grade Math Problem Solving Tournament was held at 15 sites throughout northeastern Ohio on Saturday, February 23, 2013. Ten teams of four students participated from our school. Five teams headed to Lake Ridge Academy in North Ridgeville, accompanied by Mrs. Raines, and the five other teams competed at Messiah Lutheran School in Fairview Park led by Mr. Schafer.

In order to prepare for the competition, the ten fifth grade teams met with Mrs. Raines and Mr. Schafer after school once a week to get ready for the contest using problems from past competitions. The lessons learned in the classroom from our math teachers are applied and even extended each week.

The 5th grade teams competed for 5 trophies in this category and won ALL of them! Two teams earned blue ribbons and three teams earned red ribbons. The boys and girls showed up on a Saturday to do a lot of math, and they all really had a great time. Team work is very important to the success of a team in this competition. You can see by the results that they worked well together!

Olmsted Falls Intermediate School’s 5th grade Math Club members were very well prepared to compete in the “bigger world” of math problem solving. Thank you to all of the math teachers in grades K-5 that were a part of the foundation of learning that contributed to these students’ success. For more photos, please click here.
