INTERACTIVE WORKSHOP SERIES FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS BRINGS DR. JAMES KNIGHT TO OLMSTED FALLS

Session 3: Dr. Knight Humble Conversations

NOW REGISTERING FOR SESSION 3! MISSED SESSION 2? NO PROBLEM! ALL ARE WELCOME!

Dear Bulldog Parents and Caregivers,

As the new year gets underway, it is hard to escape the negativity and divisiveness that is increasingly present in our world. I am writing to you about an exciting opportunity to start the new year off on a positive note, to learn practical ways to raise your children to look past the differences of those around them, and to practice kindness, humility, and a curiosity to learn more about the world. Read on to find out why we are providing this opportunity, and why you should join us.

The Mission

The mission of Olmsted Falls Schools is to inspire and empower students in a safe and welcoming environment where ALL students have the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. All Olmsted Falls students learn the Bulldog Way- BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, BE RESPONSIBLE, and BE KIND. Of those four expectations of behavior, RESPECTING others, and treating them with KINDNESS, are two that not only have a great impact on the school and classroom environment, but on our world.

The Vision

Today’s students are tomorrow’s co-workers, entrepreneurs, teachers, bosses, parents, and leaders.  If students practice respect and kindness, are able to listen with an open mind, and are curious to learn from others, even those with different beliefs and backgrounds, then they are on their way to being meaningful contributors to the global society we live in, fulfilling the mission of Olmsted Falls Schools, and hopefully making our world a better place for them and their own families.

The Challenge

As cultural issues and differences are highlighted in our media and political landscapes, how do we talk to our children- and teach them to talk to others- about these differences?  How do we start these conversations when we may not always agree with or understand the perspectives of those we interact with? How do we help our children move beyond our differences and find common ground with those around them? As parents and caregivers, how can we navigate these challenges, lead with our hearts, and teach our children respect, kindness, and humility, so that they may succeed now and in the future?

The Opportunity

Dr. James Knight, author of “Heart: A Journey Toward Cultural Humility”, is returning to help us meet these challenges! Join Dr. Knight as he helps us navigate the culture wars by learning the art of humble conversations. Learn how to move beyond race and other differences and engage in respectful, thoughtful discussions using empathy and HEART.

This three-part series for parents and caregivers will focus on these questions:

  • How can we put the philosophies of cultural humility, using respect and kindness, into practice in our schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities?

  • How can we be more open to identifying and recognizing our own biases, even those we may not realize we have?

  • How can we help our children learn to treat others with respect and kindness, and to be curious about the cultures of others?

  • How can we combat the self-centeredness of our culture by putting others over ourselves?

  • How can we make the world a better place, starting in our own backyards?

Session three will take place on Wednesday, March 13th from 6:00-7:30 PM.  We will meet in the Olmsted Falls Middle School Media Center for a casual, interactive dialogue.

Won’t you join us? Click HERE to RSVP for part three of this series or scan the code below. Space is limited. Adults only, please. Childcare is available with registration. All attendees will receive a free copy of Dr. Knight’s book, “Heart”, provided by Dr. Jim Lloyd, Superintendent of Olmsted Falls City Schools.

While the problems of our world may seem too big for a group of parents and caregivers in Olmsted Falls to solve, starting with an honest and open discussion about how we can raise kind and humble kids who are curious about those who are different from them, rather than judgmental, while improving ourselves in the process, is a great way to make an impact on our community. I can’t wait to meet you, and to share this experience with you.

Sincerely,

Julianne Allen
